Lavender Healing Salve — Step 1: Lavender Oil

The base for any healing salve. This infused oil captures lavender's calming, skin-soothing properties. Make it once, use it for salves, massage oils, or bath blends.

Yield: About 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup olive oil (or sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil)
  • 1/4 cup dried lavender buds
  • *Equipment:**
  • A clean glass jar with tight lid
  • A fine-mesh strainer and cheesecloth
  • A double boiler (for quick method only)

Method

  1. *Slow method (best quality):**
  2. Place the dried lavender in a jar. Cover with the oil. Seal tightly.
  3. Place in a sunny window. Shake every few days for 2–4 weeks.
  4. Strain through cheesecloth, squeezing out all the oil. Discard the spent herbs.
  5. *Quick method:**
  6. Combine the lavender and oil in a double boiler. Heat on the lowest setting for 2–3 hours, stirring occasionally. The oil should be warm — never smoking.
  7. Strain through cheesecloth. Let cool completely before storing.
  8. *Storage:** Store in a clean glass bottle or jar, away from direct sunlight.
