Homemade Electrolyte Drink

Homemade Electrolyte Drink

The everyday hydration drink. This covers the basics — sodium, potassium, magnesium — in a ratio that supports real hydration. Simple, effective, and costs pennies.

Time: 5 minutes  ·  Yield: 1 quart

Ingredients

  • 1 quart (4 cups) filtered water
  • 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt (sodium)
  • 1/4 teaspoon potassium chloride (sold as "No Salt" or "Nu-Salt" salt substitute — found in the spice aisle)
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey or maple syrup (just enough for palatability and a small amount of glucose for absorption)
  • Juice of 1 lemon or lime
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon magnesium powder (magnesium citrate or glycinate)

Method

  1. Warm 1 cup of the water slightly (not hot — just enough to dissolve everything).
  2. Add the salt, potassium chloride, honey, and magnesium (if using). Stir until fully dissolved.
  3. Add the remaining 3 cups of cold water and the citrus juice. Stir.
  4. Pour into a bottle and refrigerate.
  5. *Suggested use:** Drink throughout the day, especially in hot weather, after exercise, or during illness.
Note: This recipe provides a balanced ratio of sodium and potassium — the two electrolytes you lose most through sweat. The small amount of sugar (from honey) isn't for sweetness — it actually aids sodium absorption in the small intestine (this is the principle behind oral rehydration solutions used worldwide). Adjust sweetness and citrus to your taste.
