Golden Milk (Haldi Doodh)
The original golden formula. Warm, creamy, and deeply soothing — this is the drink you reach for before bed, when you feel a cold coming on, or when you need something comforting that also happens to be nourishing.
Time: 10 minutes · Yield: 1 serving
Ingredients
- ●1 1/2 cups milk (whole dairy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk)
- ●1 teaspoon ground turmeric (or 1 tablespoon golden paste — recipe follows)
- ●1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ●1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
- ●Pinch of ground black pepper
- ●1 teaspoon coconut oil or ghee
- ●1-2 teaspoons raw honey or maple syrup (add after removing from heat)
- ●Optional: pinch of cardamom, pinch of nutmeg
Method
- Combine the milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
- Whisk gently as it heats — a milk frother works well for a creamier texture.
- Heat until steaming and warm but not boiling (2-3 minutes). Boiling can make it taste bitter and destroys honey's enzymes if added too early.
- Remove from heat. Let cool for 1-2 minutes, then stir in the honey.
- Pour into your favorite mug.
Note: Full-fat coconut milk makes the richest, most luxurious golden milk. This is an evening drink in many households — the warmth and magnesium in the milk can promote relaxation. Turmeric stains everything. Use a dedicated mug or one you're not precious about. If you drink this daily, make the golden paste below — it turns this into a 2-minute routine.
